The Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged has been a great success for many years due to the knowledge, dedication and commitment of our VOLUNTEERS. There is something for everyone! From running an event, keeping score or timing a race to handing out awards. The smiles on the faces of these fine athletes as they cross the finish line or receive their first medal, is a gratification you will remember for years to come.

Below are some opportunities available and a brief description of the duties involved, with a link to the appropriate volunteer form (a pdf document you must download & print). Please fill out the form completely, including waiver. Return by April 15 to: Games for the Physically Challenged, Hamlin Beach State Park, 1 Camp Road, Hamlin, NY 14464 OR fax to (585) 964-7821.

You will be contacted by May 15 to let you know if your application has been accepted and which events & activities you have been scheduled to work.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & DESCRIPTIONS:

Officials:  Officiate track events, field events, and swimming events (see Officials form for more details of days and times).  Please use this Official's Form to apply.  If you are not a certified official, please look below for other opportunities to work for a sport.

Interpreters:  Interpreters are needed at all event stations to interpret for our deaf and hearing impaired athletes. (Sign language certification required).  Please use this Interpreter's Form to apply.

Medical: Please call (585) 964-2462 ext. 234 if you are interested in volunteering as part of our medical support staff. (Certification required)


For the committees listed below, please use the General Volunteer Form to apply.

Awards:  Awarding medals to individual athletes and packing awards for schools.

Athlete Registration: Verify athlete registration; distribute ID cards, setup/tear down registration area. Must be available by 8:00am both days (Thursday & Friday).

Basketball:  Scorekeepers are needed.

Clean-Up:
Thursday - Pick up litter after opening ceremony.
Friday and Saturday - clean up during and at the conclusion of all events - track, pool area, gyms, registration area, demonstration area, refreshment areas, (inside & out), especially after lunch.

Commodities: Distribution of athlete uniforms. Must be available by 8:00am both days.

Demonstrations: Assist at specific demonstration by providing instruction, encouraging participants, ensuring safety of the children, and assist with setup/clean up of area.

Equipment/Setup: Setup/Tear down information booths, slalom/demonstration areas; distribute all equipment needed for competitions/demonstrations.

Field Events: Assist officials, measuring, recording, retrieve implements, etc…

Food: Setup, serve, and clean up. Must be available for full shift.

Opening Ceremony: THURSDAY ONLY. Set up opening ceremonies area, decorate stage area, line up athletes, crowd control and clean up of the area, etc.

Pre-School:  Supervise games for pre-school athletes; provide a safe environment. Setup/clean up of pre-school area.

Slalom:  Setup and clean up of slalom course area; assisting athletes through the course.

Statistics:  Record accurate competition results, assign standings, route information to Awards. Must have knowledge of classifications.

Swimming:  Assist with organization of events, assist athletes in the pool, swimming buddy

Table Tennis:  Assist officials with scoring, help as needed.

Track:  Assist with clerking for track races, help with line up of athletes, Guide runners for the blind and visually impaired.

Volunteer Registration:  Verify volunteer registration, distribute ID tags, commodities. Setup/ tear down of registration area.

Water & Ice:  Distributing water to competitors and volunteers. Fill water jugs at all events.

Nassau Community College Fieldhouse (gyms & pool), 1 Education Drive Garden City, NY 11530 (the Fieldhouse is opposite Mitchel Field, off Charles Lindbergh Blvd.)

It is recommended that volunteers bring appropriate clothing to wear in case of rain. Generally, events will be held in the original locations rain or shine.
In the case of severe inclement weather on Thursday, events will be moved to the Butler Building located at Mitchel Field, and on Friday or Saturday, all events will be held in the Nassau Community College Athletic Complex (Field House on the first level and swimming pool and gymnasium on the lower level). All activity areas are wheelchair accessible.
